Elementary School - Children Form Their Vision
Did you know that studies reveal elementary school children often see themselves as dropouts by the third grade?
These years are very important to your children for many reasons. Although schools typically focus their dropout prevention efforts on high school students, the early years are critical. Children start to form their vision of themselves at this time.
Children develop at different rates. You need to identify learning problems as early as possible.
Here are six keys to success in the early grades:
1. Make sure your children attend school regularly.
2. Read frequently to (and with) your children.
3. Make sure your children are reading at grade level by no later than third grade. If you notice any reading difficulties, see the school's or district's reading specialist as soon as possible.
4. Listen to what they say about school. Do they like it or dislike it? Emphasize the things they like.
5. Praise them frequently for school work done well. They develop a sense of accomplishment when their efforts are recognized.
6. If you suspect learning difficulties, don't be afraid to request an evaluation for special education services. The earlier the intervention, the better the chance the difficulties can be overcome.
These and other keys will help your children get off to a great start in school.
