High School - The Worst Best Years
Back in the day -
Most of us look back on high school with mixed emotions. There are parts we loved. There are parts we’d love to forget.
In any case, we’d all like to spare our kids the social traumas. On the other hand, navigating the academic side is critical to their future success.
Here are five keys to help your children:
1. Encourage them to earn enough credits in their first year to get to the next grade. If they can make it through their first year, they are well on their way to graduation.
2. Make sure they do their best while they’re trying to figure out their future. Students often dig a hole for themselves that they can’t climb out from later. This is especially true of kids who aren’t interested in college until it’s too late.
3. Don’t make them focus exclusively on their shortcomings. I’ve seen students so pressured by their parents to address their worst subjects that they have little time left to develop their talents.
4. In the subjects they love, insist that they take the most challenging courses available. Don’t worry that they’re too hard. If your children love something, they’ll work harder at it.
5. Don’t let them slack off their senior year. Rather than take the year off, have them use it to prepare for college or the workforce.
These are just a few of the keys you can use to help your children prepare for a successful future.
