Homework Help

For New Material

What to do when the teacher assigns new material as homework -

Homework help is often necessary because new material was introduced as homework. Generally, teachers shouldn't assign new material as homework.

One possible exception is a reading assignment. Otherwise, it's not considered appropriate to assign material that the teacher hasn't introduced and explained in class.

When teachers assign new material as homework, it often leads to the following problems:

1. Excessive time and effort devoted to the homework assignment due to confusion. This can lead to student dissatisfaction with the teacher and with school.

2. The possibility of reinforcing an incorrect technique or process. If the teacher hasn't demonstrated the proper technique in class, students frequently discover their own techniques. Unfortunately, sometimes these techniques may be wrong. If they are, students practice these errors over and over again at home without intervention.

If this happens to your child, speak privately with the teacher. Often, it's simply an oversight on the part of the teacher.
