Math - The Key To Success Or A Necessary Evil?

How you can help -

Many children struggle with math, but there are things you can do to help them. You can't just ignore the problem, because basic skills are required for many other fields of study.

Here are five quick tips:

1. Refuse to accept that your children "can't do it." Encourage them. With the right teacher, just about everyone can learn it.

2. Monitor their assignments and make sure your children are keeping up in class. Many bad grades are the result of assignments not completed.

3. Rule out gender bias as the source of the problem. Unfortunately, some teachers actually believe that females aren't as good in this subject as males. If your daughter is making poor grades, ask the principal to share the teacher's grade distributions broken down by gender.

4. Have an older child or friend help them. A new way of explaining will often solve the problem.

5. Hire a professional tutor. Tutors see the same types of problems again and again. Usually, they've developed ways to address these problems.
